After 45 years you will find dirt and residuals underneath the platter. Especially the residuals around the transport rubber makes it necessary to remove all parts belonging to the auto shut-off mechanism.

Be careful not to bend any of the parts that you are going to remove and clean. 

Remove only the indicated parts and clean ONLY the parts and surfaces that are mentioned. Don’t lubricate anything except it is mentioned in the text! 

This procedure is the one I use for many many years with success.
